Burke Shire was built on the back of the cattle industry which is still the major industry found in the Shire today. Other industries include tourism, fishing and mining. The Shire boasts many natural features such as Lawn Hill National Park, abundant wildlife, pristine rivers, amazing fishing, an uncapped natural hot water bore, sunset and star gazing on the saltpans and the unique feature of the Morning Glory Cloud formation. www.burkeshirecouncil.com
The Gulflander
The Gulflander historic rail experience ventures from Normanton on the remote Gulf of Carpentaria to Croydon 140 km away. This is old gold territory with a history to match the incredible terrain. Opened in 1891 to join Normanton to the teeming Croydon goldfields, the line has never been linked to the main Queensland Rail network. Old RM93 is the longest serving railmotor the line has seen and one of only a few still running in Australia. With abundant wildlife and distinctive geography to observe this is much more than a rail journey. www.gulflander.com.au
Halls Creek - Heart of the Kimberley
Halls Creek is located in the central Kimberley region, and is the home of renowned natural features such as the Bungle-Bungles and Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater. It is also a treasure trove of Aboriginal culture and art. Halls Creek Shire contains more artistic diversity and successful art centres than perhaps any other shire in Australia. From the distinctive ochre paintings of the Kija artists from Warmun, to the dazzling variety of acrylic paintings from Balgo, to emerging centres at Kundat Djaru, Mulan, Yiyili and Ngumpan, Halls Creek is the hub for those who seek an authentic Kimberley cultural experience.
