The Carpentaria Shire is located along the south eastern edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria, stretching from the Mitchell River in the north, to the Leichardt River in the west; approximately 64 000km2. The countryside ranges from vast, flat inland plains to mangrove fringes to deltas and saltpans along the coastal edges of the south-east Gulf. Burke Shire was named after the ill fated explorer Robert O’Hara Burke. The Shire covers an area of 41,802sq km with a population of 500. There are two townships - Burketown and Gregory. Burke Shire is rich in historical sites. The heritage listed Tourist Information Centre in Burketown houses historical photos and memorabilia.
