This popular tourism centre has all visitor facilities as well as a host of local attractions, so plan to stop for a few days.

From the south The Explorer’s Way follows the route of John McDouall Stuart, the first explorer to cross the continent in 1862. Many travellers coming from this direction enjoy Central Australia, with its many spectacular attractions including Uluru and Kings Canyon. Others come through the Barkly Tablelands on the Overlanders Way.

From the west The Savannah Way is covered in our section on Broome to Katherine.

Many travellers come to The Savannah way from Darwin, just 324 kilometres north of Katherine. The Northern Territory’s Top End is full of amazing natural and cultural experiences

Normanton/Karumba

The Matilda Highway is a popular route with regular facilities and many attractions along the way. The Burke and Wills Roadhouse is a crossroads for those considering loops to Gregory Downs and Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn Hill).
