Information For Travellers - Climate
Australia’s tropical savannahs lie in a monsoonal climatic zone characterised by two distinct seasons:
- The 'wet' (hot and humid summer months from December to March), and
- The 'dry' (cooler winter months from May to October).
Of course Aboriginal traditional knowledge separates the year into up to 13 seasons depending on the group and area, with changes signalled by the flowering of plants or appearance of particular birds or hatchlings.
The wet season has lush growth and prolific bird life. However rain can cut off towns and prevent travel. Cyclones can also pass through the region in these months. The great news is that the land and people recover very quickly from these natural cycles.
The dry season has warm days and cool nights (great for travelling and camping), very little rain (keeping roads open and in good condition) and clear skies with millions of stars.
Below are some indicative rainfall and temperature figures. Please remember that these are averages not necessarily probabilities. Phone a local council, police station of business for the best immediate local advice, especially in the less predictable months of April, May and December.
Enjoy our changing seasons and observe on your journey how northern Australia’s plants, animals and people have adapted to this annual pattern.
