Broome to Katherine - The People

The Kimberley has always been a frontier - from Aboriginal migration to 4WD traveller. The people here respect the land’s beauty and potential threat, so please take care of the country and yourself.

A great way to connect with the indigenous people of several regions is to visit local art galleries. Check at local Visitor Information Centres en route.

Most festivals are between May and November, including the Kununurra Ord Valley Muster, Derby’s Bush Poets’ Breakfast and Broome’s Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl. You’ll find more details of these fun local events in our event calendar. The most regular horse racing is in Broome, with fun local meets including the Halls Creek Picnic Races in October.

Regional organisations carrying out important environmental and community work include:

Rangelands NRM The Kimberley Development Commission The Kimberley Society encourages research on the region. Kimberley Wildlife Rescue takes care of orphaned or injured creatures: Phone 08 9169 1229

Alcohol is an issue in the region, and contributes to problems in many communities. The Western Australian government and local councils have adopted programs to restrict alcohol sales and public consumption in many communities. Check the website information and help these efforts to improve the lives of many locals.

This is a huge and very remote area where border surveillance resources are stretched to their maximum. Give our border protectors a hand and report any suspicious activities to the Customs Hotline: Phone 1800 06 1800.
