Broome to Katherine - Birdwatching
You can’t help but notice the diversity of birds in Australia’s Tropical Savannahs. Learn a little about the birds, their habitats and cycles, and you’ll understand and appreciate the natural environment much more.
An early morning walk or late afternoon rest beside a body of water are usually rewarding. Invest in some binoculars and a bird book and do a little reading before you go for best value.
Around 300 bird species can be found at various times in the Kimberley. Birdwatching hot spots between Broome and Katherine include:
- Broome Bird Observatory - a mecca for bird watchers especially during wader migration (August/September) and comfortable accommodation near the beach for anyone
- Mornington Wilderness Camp is a rich range of habitats with Gouldian Finches, Spinifex Pigeons among others
- Windjana Gorge and other similar habitats are good for the White-Quilled Rock Pigeon
- Between Mount Barnett Station and the mouth of the Mitchell River (eg Upper Manning Gorge, Mitchell Falls) you can find the endemic Black Grass Wren
- Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve between Kununurra and Wyndham is excellent for waterbirds
- The Ord River below the dam has a wide variety of waterbirds
- Lake Argyle has great numbers of Hardheads and Eurasian Coots, Grey Teal, Wandering Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese
- Katherine - Sewerage treatment works (yep!) for wading birds and the road in to Edith Falls for Hooded Parrots, Black-tailed Treecreeper, Varied Lorikeet and Rufous-throated Honeyeater. Allegedly Gouldian Finch in the Salmon Gums north of the town.
